What Happened After Wild Inclusion In Minot, North Dakota

Below is a summary of the policy discussion which took place on April 19th, 2021. This is a supplement to my Why Not A Pride Flag in Minot article.

The Mayor recognized Alderman Tom Ross. He recommended the council accept the first proposal offered by the City Manager and received multiple voiced seconds. The Mayor then asked the City Manager for more detail on the proposed policy.

The City Manager had researched policies throughout the country for other municipalities asking what flags to fly on their government property. He presented his findings verbally with references to a memo delivered in March. He also discussed the case of Harold Shurtleff v. Boston, noting that the Massachusetts state capitol’s flag policy had stood up in Federal Court.

The Mayor thanked the City Manager for preparing the information and then acknowledged Alderman Tom Ross. He amended his motion to strike various sections from the policy.

The Mayor asked if Alderman Ross also meant to exclude another section that concerned unauthorized flags…
