Take Your Pride Off the Iron Throne

June is coming.
With June comes the Pride Talkers: A certain personage who feel content to challenge our understanding of Pride — which is great! I encourage all Pride Talkers to continue talking, writing, and distributing their opinion. In doing so, however, Pride Talkers should take care to not emulate Joffrey’s self-serving version of the War of the Five Kings as Devlyn Camp has done with their Chicago Reader article about Pride in the Park.
Pride in the Park, a new Chicago based event to celebrate Pride, is slated to take place Saturday, June 29th in Grant Park. The lineup includes a variety of individuals, but most problematically for Camp is Iggy Azalea. It is completely fair that Camp questions Azaelea’s participation in the event after the artist dropped out of Pittsburg Pride in 2015 for problematic tweeting. However, given Australia’s questionable past in regard to race and sexuality, how surprised can we be that an artist hailing from the country displays a similar lack of nuance on the subjects? While that country may be changing, one would expect the artist to redeem herself with some sort of display that proves the deserved fall from grace was just the beginning of a broader education.
